But everything changed in the early 20th century with the invention of electric, illuminated signage. Illuminated signage marked a major turning point in visual communication because it allowed messages to be seen after dark, in any weather, and from far greater distances. For the first time, businesses could capture attention 24/7, transforming city streets into bright, energetic hubs of activity. Lighting brought movement, color, and vibrancy to signage, shifting them from simple identifiers to expressive visual experiences that shaped the character of cities.

Every holiday season, downtown Raleigh becomes a little brighter, but one tradition stands out as a true celebration of imagination and light: the Illuminate Art Walk, presented by Downtown Raleigh Alliance. Created in 2020 to bring joy during Stay-at-Home orders, Illuminate Art Walk has since grown into one of the city’s most cherished winter experiences. Now in its sixth year, the Art Walk features large-scale, light-based installations from regional artists, transforming plazas, sidewalks, and storefronts into glowing expressions of creativity. And this year, we’re honored that our work will be part of the lineup!
About Our Illuminate Installation: “Old Signs, New Shine – Let It Snow NC”
For decades, our sign company has blended artistry, fabrication, and technology to create custom signage that communicates, inspires, and lights the way for local businesses. Titled “Old Signs, New Shine – Let It Snow NC,” our 8’ x 4’ piece blends creativity and sustainability, bringing together recycled materials, skilled fabrication, and the expressive power of light in a festive and meaningful way.
The glowing letters at the center of the installation are handcrafted from reclaimed channel letters, repurposed aluminum, and salvaged acrylic. These are materials our local sign company once used in storefronts across the region. Trim cap, polycarbonate plastic, and leftover hardware from past projects were creatively repurposed to form unique design elements and intricate details. All of these pieces are mounted on a backdrop of reclaimed pallet wood, finished using the Shou-sugi-ban torching technique. This process carefully chars the wood’s surface to preserve it naturally, making it resistant to fire, rot, moisture, and insects. Once burned, the wood is brushed to reveal the grain’s texture and then sealed for durability, resulting in a distinctive, richly textured finish.
Energy-efficient LED lighting brings the piece to life at night, washing the reclaimed materials in a soft, festive glow. This piece is more than a holiday display, demonstrating how reclaimed materials can be transformed into something purposeful and inspiring. It represents our belief that creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship can come together to create something meaningful, art that illuminates both a space and the values of the community around it.
Where to Experience the Illuminate Art Walk
This year’s Illuminate Art Walk will run from December 5th to January 5th, primarily along Fayetteville Street and Smoky Hollow near Glenwood South. The entire route is easily walkable, making it perfect for exploring with family, friends, or holiday visitors. Our display will be located at 336 Fayetteville Street, directly across from the ABC studios in downtown Raleigh. We’re excited to reveal it soon.
Tips for the Best Experience
- The Art Walk is completely self-guided and free.
- Installations are large, interactive, and illuminated, making them easy to find and fun to explore.
- Be sure to take in the storefront decorations, which add extra sparkle along the way.
- Plan for about an hour and a half to enjoy the full route at nightfall for the best lighting effects.
